Scope of Work

A detailed written description of all the work to be carried out in a renovation project, including materials, specifications, and deliverables.

The scope of work (sometimes called a “scope” or “SOW”) is the document that defines exactly what will and won’t be included in your renovation project. It’s the foundation that everything else — quotes, contracts, timelines — is built on.

Why scope of work matters

A clear scope of work:

  • Ensures you and your contractor agree on what’s being done
  • Allows contractors to give you accurate quotations
  • Reduces the risk of disputes during the project
  • Helps you compare quotes from different contractors on a like-for-like basis
  • Prevents scope creep — the gradual expansion of a project beyond its original intent

What to include in a scope of work

A good scope of work should be specific enough that two different contractors reading it would understand the same project:

  • Room-by-room breakdown of all work to be done
  • Materials and specifications — not just “new kitchen cabinets” but the type, style, and quality level
  • What’s included and excluded — be explicit about boundaries
  • Fixtures and fittings — who supplies what (you or the contractor?)
  • Finish quality — what standard of finish do you expect?

Scope of work vs. project brief

A project brief is a homeowner-friendly version of a scope of work — it describes what you want in language you’re comfortable with. A scope of work is the more formal, detailed version that contractors use to price and plan the job. Aikitektly helps you create a project brief that bridges this gap.
